Guest Blogger: How to Dress From Your Closet

Have you ever thought that getting dressed is the hardest part of the day? You’re not alone. There are mornings when I stare at my closet in complete befuddlement, wondering how the random assortment of clothing before my eyes will magically transform itself into a fun, modest outfit that will take me from work to drinks with friends or dinner with the family.  Here are a few combinations that have helped me shape new and exciting looks out of what I already own–because nothing is better than looking fab without spending a cent!

You have a suit– tell those pants to take a hike and try pairing the blazer with a patterned or brightly colored skirt. This look combines professional with flirty, a winning combination in my book.

You have a striped shirt– sticking it under a floral dress. This easy and visually stimulating pattern mix gives any dress full coverage on top while keeping the look exciting.

You have a graphic tee–pair it with a cardigan and pencil skirt and don’t forget the heels! You’ll find yourself wanting to raid your kids’ closets when you see the polished-but-hip result.

You have a dress that is too short for comfort– pretend it is a tunic and belt it over a skirt. Adding the skirt makes the outfit modest, and belting the dress makes it all more cohesive. As a general rule: when in doubt, try a belt.

You have a husband/boyfriend/son/father—when your closet gets old, raid his! With the help of tucking and belts, men’s shirts make wonderful options for us, too. Pair his button-down with your floral skirt, his sweater with your pencil skirt, and his graphic tee with your slim-fitting cardigan. Your options will seem endless when another closet joins in the mix.

About Nina: I’m Nina, a Modern Orthodox Jew who blogs over at http://alltumbledown.blogspot.com. I started blogging a few months ago after becoming pretty seriously addicted to style blogs and wishing that I could see some women who tried to dress creatively while taking modesty into consideration. As Hillel, a wise Jewish sage, said some two thousand years ago: “In a place where there are no men, strive to be a man“(Pirkei Avot, 2:6.) If he lived today, I think he might have said “In a place where there are no modest style bloggers, strive to be one.”

This chick is rad. I love her! I work at a salon on the upper west side (very Jewish) and it seems that many of the girls just throw on as much Chanel as possible to make their moddest clothes stylish. This girl has real style. In her bones.

Isn’t Nina’s style the best? The think that amazes me about her is how she dresses “modest” but not “churchy”. I mean, I don’t even see her style as really conservative as much as she just happens to be covered up. I love it!

Love the tops and I work most of them into my looks. I’m really interested in plugging my or my son’s graphic tees into a similar look.
