Happy First Day of School! Yes, I started school today. Twenty second grade students were waiting for me. Two criers, one lost boy (who found his way to my room), 17 talkers, and a day without A/C in 95+ degree weather later—I survived!
I’m channeling Ms. Frizzle (of the Magic School Bus book series) today, and wore a crazy multicolored vintage dress that I bought for $5 several months back. You’ll find that I love vintage dresses most of all, and after I scope out the shoes at thrift/vintage stores I always head toward the dresses. My sandals were a Marshall’s find, and my students called them “Jingle Bell Shoes”. Only God knows where I bought this belt. I tend to wear belts as often as I can. This one was a little loose; I tightened it after the picture.
I was pressed for time this morning and didn’t have enough time to take as many pictures as I would have liked, but look! No sunglasses! Yes, I am four eyes and my eyeglasses are red in these pictures. The cat you see in this photo is a stray cat that somehow made her way to our house and eventually gave birth to four kittens. We’re pretty positive that she was a house cat in her former life. This morning she kept LICKING my legs (?!) and apparently loved the Bath and Body Works lotion I put on this morning–ick! To be honest I’m not one for animals (!), but this cat is alright. I wasn’t amused that she jumped in my photo, though, and you can tell by the progression of the pics and my awful sneering face in the third photo that she caught me off guard. HA!
Despite the wretched heat, the best part of my day was talking with my old second graders from last year. It’s amazing how much they’ve changed in almost two months; lost teeth, new teeth, long hair, tan, and taller. One student peeked his head in my door, ran over to me, and literally hugged me for one minute! Aw. I miss those kids, but I know they’ll have a great time as third graders. I’m enjoying my new students, too, and I can’t wait to teach. Today was a mass of pre-tests, rules, procedures, and a brief campus tour.
Tomorrow’s post will feature a book review by Gina, a fellow blogger and teacher. You won’t want to miss it. Plus, tomorrow is the last day to get your entry in for the DSW $25 Giftcard Giveaway!
Happy Monday!

Chandra you look Amazing! I love that Mrs. Frizzle’s dress! I have about 2 more weeks of vacation left and 3 more weeks for school to start! I really miss work! =P
I’ve heard that second grade is one of the best grades to teach, have a wonderful day tomorrow! God bless!
Sheyyyyyy!!! I’ve been trying to leave a comment on 2 of your blog posts for over an hour!! :( I even restarted my computer—three times. Sigh.
Thanks so much for your compliments. I love second grade and I’m so excited for this school year! I’m going to try leaving comments on your blog in a few minutes!
Chandra
Chandra, that dress is to die for! The kids must have loved your use of color.. I do!
alltumbledown:a modest attempt at style
Wow, you’re beautiful. Your boyfriend is a lucky guy.
Nina, they did! I’m pretty sure once they saw my crazy getup I probably had them wondering, “What in the world?!” I’m sure most pro-teachers frown at anything that might distract the students, but…*shrug*! Ah, well!
@shiftb Thanks. I’ll let him know!
I love the colorful dress! Those shoes look gorgeous, too. I love it even more hearing about $5 thrift finds!! Dresses are about $7 and higher at our stores, so I would almost never find one with that price. Nice hearing about your students
That dress looks perfect for starting second grade!! I can’t believe it’s already that time again…My littles are both under 3, so it’s a while before I track my life by the school year
you look fab.
Such a bright way to start the first day of school! You’ve got me thinking about what I am going to wear now. I better start planning. I imagine you are a very compassionate teacher and your students love that about you!

Rachel, I lovvvve $5 thrift finds! There’s a local store that periodically has $5 sales, and I’ve been blessed to enter the store on those days!
Goose, thanks for your nice comments! I’m sure your days are busy with younger children, and is probably equivalent to my days spent with 20 kids!
Gina! I try to be compassionate, but every now and then I have to take a breather. Ha! I initially had planned to wear something else, but changed my mind that morning!
Okay, this dress makes me want to go vintage shopping. I am doubtful I will find treasures like everyone else but maybe I need to give it a try…
oh my gosh! you look great and that dress - precious and fun vintage! viva vintage! =D
Wow, you start school early! I taught for years and years (MS, HS, community college)—loved seeing my old students, so much fun being in the community of the school. I still love seeing them on facebook. Hope your year goes really really well.
