Modest Solution: Skirt as Dress

You know how you read blog posts and get inspired? You know how you think, “I can do that?” You know how you think that you can recreate a craft “as seen on a blog post”? You know how you attempt to DIY and every now and then the end result is a mess and you realize that you are not crafty? Oh. Wait. Is that just me?

I’ve come to grips with the fact that I lack a stellar crafting gene/bone in my body, so I’ve decided to try my absolute best to work with what I got in my own way: modest solutions with minimal refashion.

I picked up this skirt for $8 and liked the idea of wearing a midi skirt with tights, heels, and a blazer for church. When I tried the skirt on I realized that I looked a tad bit frumpy and blah in the midi skirt and decided that the dress with stretchy and flowy enough to be pulled up into a dress.

I balked at posting the pictures because the hem of the skirt was a bit higher than I realized before taking pictures (when I wore the dress it was actually lower, but when Brandon snapped the pictures Thanksgiving weekend I forgot to readjust myself after getting out of the car); I decided to post the pictures anyway because the comments in this blog post reminded me that the majority of ya’ll won’t cast judgment on my “skimming-the-knee-skirt-as-dress” refashion.

I couldn’t live (okay, I could) without my numerous vintage blazers, ample supply of skinny belts, and dozens of thick opaque tights. Here, I combine the skirt/dress over a thick cotton tank, black tights, Jessica Simpson heels, and a vintage/thrifted red velvet blazer ($3).

Your thoughts? Do you steer clear of skirts as dresses?

(Does this post seem familiar? HA! Yeah, you most likely read this post: Dress as a Top! The reverse!)

Sidenote: Do you have a blog? Are you interested in blogging? I’m revamping MoMoMod for 2012 and I’m seeking a few people to join me! Send me an email and I will reply back with the awesome details.

Such a great idea! I had a maxi that I used to do this with, but it’s gotten old and pilled so I don’t wear it out of the house much these days. Thanks for reminding me that I have skirts that COULD be turned into dresses!

One question, though - do you find it stays up with much trouble? I was always afraid of having the top of my dress slip down…

    Steal away my fair, Nikia!

Meg, no problem keeping this dress up! The waist ban was stretchty—good fit…not too snug or loose. It definitely depends on the waistband of the skirt—the stretchier the better!

    I absolutely love the re-fashion!!!

I’ve done this and I’ve done the opposite ... turn a midi dress into a maxi skirt by using a tank top as the top of the “dress” and covering up the top of the skirt with an extremely wide belt.

    Winner, winner every-time!!!!!

Love it! I’m not creative either. I don’t even try to diy anymore. I know it’ll make a mess haha.
